Indiana Jones (and My Family) in New Haven

All those who have been waiting for a new episode in the Indiana Jones saga will be elated by an article in the New York Times about the filming of scenes for Indiana Jones IV at Yale University. I found it interesting that, when I went to the official New Haven, CT site, the only mention of the filming came in a notice of street closings from June 28 to July 6 due to an unspecified event.

By chance, last week my two daughters and I took a ride up to New Haven to visit Yale. After being initially irritated by horrendous traffic and closed streets, we were happy to find that we had stumbled on the Indiana Jones set.

We had planned to visit that
Yale Center for British Art, and as we approached the building we could see a crowd of people standing on the corner watching the movie crew do their stuff. The actual filming was taking place about two blocks away. Upon entering the Center, we found that they were celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Paul Mellon, the philanthropist who founded this museum. Mellon was also one of the YCBA's major donors of art and the Center had on display paintings, prints, books, and sculptures Mellon had collected by such artists as William Hogarth, George Stubbs, William Blake, and J.M.W. Turner.

By the time we left the British Art Center, there was a break in the filming so that people could walk along Chapel Street. All the stores on one block had been transformed to look like they might have in 1957. There were also a number of vintage automobiles and trucks lining the street, along with a car with a camera afixed to it. In case you were wondering, Indy does not teach at Yale, but at fictional Marshall College
.

After traipsing about the set, we checked out the recently reopened Yale Art Gallery, one of the best college art collections in the U.S. I asked a young lady at a desk in the gallery if Harrison Ford had come in. She said that he hadn't but that another cast member Jim Broadbent had dropped by. We had a wonderful day of museum hopping and absorbing some movie magic and then headed back to the Big Apple.
